Handmade Roundup 12-5-15

Welcome back to Handmade Roundup! I’ve been super busy sewing Christmas ornaments for my shop, but I allowed myself a little break to browse Etsy and find some beautiful new items to share! 🙂

The ocean comes to life in these gorgeous ornaments by ShopNDS. Each ornament is a wood slice, and features a handpainted scene of a sea turtle surrounded by coral and sea plants.  They have awesome detail in the art, and I find them so calming to look at! Love them. ❤

MyHappyHobby is filled with tons of adorable lampwork beads, so it’s hard to pick a favorite! These colorful parrots are too cute. They come in green, blue, and yellow, and all three coordinate well together too.

I love love LOVE this vintage Moschino handbag from OceanAndMoreJewels. Great colors, great style, and lovely patent leather shine! Beautiful.

This print from BrookeLeAnneArt is an attention grabber! I love the striking contrast of the black and white zebra with the colorful flowery background. She has lots of other colorful mixed media prints too. Check them out!

Thrifting finds 10-3-15

I found a few cool things while thrifting today!

The best find was a set of 2 original 1980s My Little Ponies. One of them is a white Earth pony with pink hair and a circular heart cutie mark, and the other is a white flocked pegasus with bright red hair and palm trees on her butt. I’ll have to hit up the collector sites to figure out their names and dates.

I love the finished cross stitch of the name KELLY, accented with cute Precious Moments style characters. I’ll get it cleaned up and nicely framed, and maybe it will make a cute Christmas gift for some little Kelly out there. 🙂

The purse is a cute beaded clutch from the 60s-70s. It has a small stain on the back, but I’m pretty sure it will clean up just fine. The three hearts are 80s Syroco style plastic wall hangings. I haven’t decided yet if I’ll sell them vintage as-is, or repaint them in prettier colors (perhaps pink and white, or two shades of pink?).

I also found a little pack of glue sticks for 10 cents. I love finding crafting supplies for next to nothing!

Flock of Butterflies

What’s better than one pretty butterfly? A whole flock of them!

I always grab vintage butterfly wall hangings when I see them at thrift stores or yard sales. Usually it’s just one or maybe two, so I save them up until I have a nice set of matching pieces. Today I decided to organize my collection and see if I have any matches to put up for sale. And in fact, I do!

I love these three gold ones. They’re from Syroco, and have great wing patterns and lots of golden shine!

A set of brown wicker bugs. These are plastic, but are molded to look like wood and wicker. Lots of great swirls and curls in the design.

And then there are these cool green ones from Homco. There were only two of these, and I doubt I’ll find a third, so I went ahead and listed them as a pair. The design is the same as the wicker ones above, but these have a nice deep emerald green color.

I still have a few designs that are waiting for a match, so I’ll hang on to them and keep looking!

Oh yeah, here’s Ripley napping on the bed while I list the completed sets:

Vintage Before and After: Beaded Fruit

I found some cool vintage fruit at the thrift store this morning! A banana, peach, orange, and lemon, made from a styrofoam form decorated with hundreds of faceted beads. The only problem was that they were filthy…they were covered in what I call “kitchen grunge”; a thin coat of yellowish grease covered in a layer of dust. I knew the beads were supposed to sparkle, but they were completely dull.

So off to the bathroom sink they went! I grabbed some detergent and my trusty toothbrush and started gently scrubbing.

Here is the water after cleaning all four fruits… Ew.

And here’s the fruit all cleaned up and sparking again!

Bonanza of Belts!

I love finding forgotten vintage treasures and sending them off to their new homes! One of my favorite things are vintage belts, especially the 80s era stretch belts. The buckles are big and fancy, with an almost infinite variety of shapes and styles, and they’re always vibrantly colorful! And the elastic makes them able to fit a wide variety of sizes, so they have a lot of versatility too.

Here are a few of my favorites:

I can’t wait to see what cool belts I’ll find next! 🙂

Handmade Roundup: July 7-13, 2014

Welcome to this week’s Handmade Roundup!

This is certainly a one of a kind piece of artwork! This mixed media art by WrensEyeDesigns features lots of toy cars, arranged in a rainbow radiating from one corner. The listing says that 300 cars were used! This would make a great piece of decor for a car lover, or a toy collector, or anyone who likes unique and unusual artwork. Very neat!

Check out this groovy (get it?) upcycled record by SecondSpinDesigns! It features a 33.3 rpm vinyl record cut into the shape of a 70s disco girl, complete with afro. They even offer a choice of several different artist’s records you can use. What a fun way to keep a vintage record out of the landfill, while making a distinctive piece of home decor.

It was hard to pick a favorite from Jmorco! The whole shop is filled with cool, sporty clothing in bright colors. Who wouldn’t feel awesome going to the gym in this cute Supergirl inspired sports bra? I love everything in this shop! And the kickass physique of the model (is that Jmorco herself?) definitely motivates me to hit the weights! 😉

CraftsbySigita is offering this lovely rainbow necklace. This necklace features discs of brightly colored shell, in pink, purple, yellow, green, blue, and brown, with coordinating seed  beads between. I love the bright, happy, pop-art vibe of this cool jewelry!

Handmade Round Up! May 5-11, 2014

I’m going to do a recurring feature (hopefully each Sunday), where I highlight some of the awesome handmade and vintage items and shops that I’ve found each week. Most of these will come from Etsy, as that’s the handmade venue that I’m most familiar with, but these can potentially come from anywhere. There’s so much amazing talent out there, and I can’t wait to share it! 🙂 Here are some recent finds that wowed me:

Amberstudios is a cool shop that specializes in upcycled clothing and accessories. Everything is bright, colorful and highly detailed, and has a lovely nature theme. The natural colors and foliage textures make the clothing look like something an elf queen would wear! ❤ Many of her listings appear to be custom orders (so please don’t purchase unless your name is in the title!), but she has some ready to ship items as well. In addition to the gorgeous items, I also admire the creator’s commitment to sustainability and using upcycled materials.

This artist, David Wyatt, has some beautiful fantasy artwork. I love the incredible detail in the paintings; I don’t think I’ve ever seen such meticulously rendered mossy stones! I also like the wonderful European fantasy feel in the artwork. This looks like an ancient and beautiful world I would love to explore and be a part of. I would do anything to live in the goat man’s little stone house by the water!

There’s one word that best describes InkPug: CUTE! :3 All of the artwork features pug dogs doing what they do best: being silly and adorable! The owners also have great personalities, and it shines through in their listings (who are Big Ed and Norma? Click a listing to find out!). I can’t help but smile when looking at this cute-as-heck art.

Petrune is a seriously cool vintage clothing shop! They have clothes from just about every decade of the last century (conveniently arranged in chronological order in the sections), but the real treat is the REALLY old things! There’s a nice selection of Victorian and Edwardian pieces, many of which are near or even over 100 years old. Great finds! Who wouldn’t want to relive the “Gay 90s” in this poofy purple blouse?

And my favorite item of the week, by far:

My jaw dropped when I first saw this: a life-size needle felted Nubian goat kid by cvandellen! This is one of the most incredible needle-felted creations I’ve ever seen. Such amazing attention to detail…look how real the little guy looks! Incredible work. I love love love it!!

That’s it for this week! I hope to do this feature each week (life permitting, of course).
