Thrift shop find: blocks and bacon

I made a cool find at the thrift shop today: a bucket of old wooden toy blocks! There are several different types, including ones with old-timey Disney characters on them. I’ll have to do a little research, but judging by the graphics, I believe most of these blocks to be 1950s-60s era. Aren’t they neat?

I also found these, though I didn’t buy them…they’re bacon flavored envelopes. Glue + artificial meat flavor = yum! The label says they’re from the makers of Bacon Salt, Baconnaise, and BaconPOP. These are some (gross artificial) bacon-loving people!

You never know just what you’ll find in a thrift shop!

New items: crochet dish cloths

My mother, Linda, has joined my shop with a few of her own items. 🙂 She’s offering sets of crocheted dishcloths/potholders in a variety of fun colors.

New item: upcycled spotted piggy bank

New in the shop: a cute blue and white piggy bank! This little guy was sooooo fun to paint. 🙂 The little ceramic bank was found secondhand, then redecorated by hand with fresh white paint and dozens of blue spots. It would make such a cute addition to a child’s room!

In progress: not-so-mystery ornaments

Well, July 4th is almost here. Which means it’s time to think ahead and start prepping for the next holiday on the calendar. Here’s an in progress pic of my next set of handmade felt ornaments. Let’s see, black and orange, “zombie” green, black cats…it’s Halloween, of course! Obviously the date is a good way off, but I like to be prepared waaaaaaaaay in advance! 🙂

Upcycling plans: Kitty, unicorn, and flower

Today’s upcycling targets! I found these cute ceramic figures at a secondhand shop, and I’m going to clean them up and repaint them. The poor unicorn is filthy…but that’s nothing some soap and a toothbrush can’t fix! 🙂 The flower is actually a candlestick. It has some old wax inside the flower part, but I should be able to clean that out. Not a bad little haul for a Tuesday!

New creation: upcycled ceramic bunny

New in my shop: a cute upcycled ceramic bunny! I found this at a thrift store…it was sad and dingy, but I saw potential in the little guy! I cleaned it up and repainted it in pastel spring/summer colors. Now it’s a colorful rabbit, banging his little drum with a cute smile. I think this would be adorable in a child’s nursery!

I also tried out a grey background this time. I’m not sure if I like it better than the wood or not. Hmm. Let me know what you think!

Twitter hashtags

I love promoting on Twitter! I’ve found that this is a great way to get some exposure for your items, and to do some networking. There are a few hashtags set up for marketing on specific days and times, and I’ve been trying to collect as many as I can. This is a list of everything I have so far:

#crafthour      Sunday 7-8pm GMT   (2-3 EST)
#indiehour     Tuesday 7-8pm GMT  (2-3 EST)
#handmadehour     Wednesday 7:30-9:30 pm GMT (2:30-4:30 EST)
#handmadehourUSA     Wednesday 7-8pm EST (12pm-1am GMT)
#weddinghour       Wednesday 9-10pm GMT (4-5 EST)
#twittersisters     Thursday 8:30-9:30pm  (3:30-4:30 EST)
#rushhourbiz     weekdays 6-7pm GMT (1-2 EST)

Am I missing anything? Please let me know if there are any others. I would love to participate. 🙂

Felt scraps

Well, I’ve finally done it…I’ve filled up an entire sandwich bag with felt scraps. These little scraps are what’s left over when I cut out the shapes for my felt jewelry and ornaments. There are a few sorta big pieces, but most of them are teensy irregular snips and bits.

I would like to use them somehow, so I’m busy brainstorming project ideas. What could be made with a bunch of tiny felt scraps? Most of the pieces could be cut to make little flower petals, maybe. Or I’ve been thinking about making a fabric ACEO as a contrast to the regular paper ones that I make…perhaps a mosaic of some sort? Hmm.

Let me know if you have any ideas! 🙂

In progress: upcycled trinkets

What a beautiful Sunday morning, on the first day of June! I’m at my kitchen table, doing some painting. 🙂 I’m working on a cute porcelain bunny and a wooden business card holder, which should be finished and in the shop sometime this week.

In progress: felt stars

This is what I’m working on right now: a double order of patriotic star ornaments. I’ll finish sewing them tonight and ship them out first thing tomorrow. I hope the customer enjoys them! 🙂
